Founder & Chairwoman

Bridgette Frazier

Founder Bridgette Frazier, a 5th generation Gullah Descendent, was born in Charleston, SC and raised in Bluffton, SC. She holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Professional English with a minor in Secondary Education from South Carolina State University, and also holds an MPA in Public Administration with a concentration in Disaster Management from American Public University. Since returning back to her Lowcountry roots in 2012 after almost a decade long career in education in Palm Beach County, she has made preserving Gullah Heritage a primary focus. Thus in 2022, she founded The Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center. Seeing the absence, inconsistencies and mere invisibility of the vibrant and rich culture of Bluffton's Native Gullah Community, Frazier felt compelled to act in a way that would not only bring these forgotten stories to life, but also to ensure they would never be forgotten again.

Our History

Non-profit organization founded in 2021

The Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center is a non-profit organization founded in 2021 with the mission of preserving and celebrating the rich history and culture of the Gullah community in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. As an educational and community engagement center, our goal is to cultivate experiences that promote learning about Bluffton's distinctive Gullah heritage through programs, events, and exhibitions. A key initiative for the Center is the development of an interactive facility with interior and exterior exhibits that will immerse visitors in the rich history of the contributions of Black Americans to Bluffton’s history while also highlighting the significant impact Gullah Geechee history and traditions have had and continue to have in Bluffton and the surrounding areas.

This cultural heritage site will serve as a vibrant gathering place where people can explore and gain a deeper understanding of the Gullah community's unique sense of place. By advancing education and engagement with a focus on preservation, the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center plays a vital role in safeguarding the region's cultural legacy for future generations. It operates as a non-profit relying on community support, grant funding, and private donations to further its cultural conservation efforts through interactive experiences celebrating the Bluffton’s Gullah roots.
